There were some very positive signs from Mexico City Mayor Lopez Obrador in his interview with the Financial Times yesterday. AMLO said he would maintain a strong fiscal policy, not raise taxes and would not renegotiate NAFTA, even though he disagrees with the original deal. I not sure about his idea of promoting economic growth primarily through the construction industry, but at least that's an industry that will help create some needed infrastructure (as opposed to a real demagogue who would use money for handouts rather than infrastructure).
Overall, I think this was an interview he needed to begin settling some international concern and also start moving his candidacy to the center. Let's remember that a year out from the last Brazilian election the world was really concerned about Lula's economic populism and in the end his populism is what allowed him to implement some real budgetary discipline that a conservative probably could not have passed.
