Violent crime related to drug trafficking has greatly increased this year in Mexico. Kidnappings have also increased and private security analysts are saying Mexico (and Iraq) may have passed Colombia for the country with the highest kidnapping rate. Polls are showing that most people have been or know a victim of crime. Every day the average citizen sees news about events like the recent killing of a legislator and drug-related violence near the border.
While the discussion about the Mexican election has focused mostly on economic issues, AMLO's populism and the corrupt politics of those trying to take out the Mexico City mayor, over the next 6-12 months we'll likely see an increase of crime and security issues.
As far as I know, none of the three main candidates have made the issue of rising crime a major part of their platform. If I was giving advice right now, whether for AMLO, Madrazo or Creel, the candidate who gets ahead on dealing with this issue may find an unexpected boost in the polls within the next several months.
