Stopping the strongmen

An electoral commission in Nigeria wants to ban the reelection of any former president or governor, whether civilian or military. While banning all reelections seems to go a bit overboard, if it is actually put into effect, it might end the string of strongmen that have ruled in the country and inject fresh blood into the political system. The immediate effect would be to disqualify two former generals, Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida, who are candidates for the presidential election in 2007.

Obviously these reforms are only suggestions and face a long, tough path to implementation. It's possible the current President Obasanjo may be open to the idea, because he can't run again anyway and because it would knock some of his political opponents out of the running.

Of course, while the reform looks promising on paper, Mexico's lack of reelection didn't exactly hurt the PRI's lock on power for 71 years, so there are still loopholes even if it does pass.
