Today's NYT covers two Mexican brothers who have migrated illegally across the border and back for ten years. They've been stopped a half dozen times, but will continue to try because once they get across, they know there are plenty of jobs available.
The AP reports today that Brazil (finally) is cracking down on human smuggling rings. People pay several thousand dollars to be trafficked into the US for work. An article in today's Boston Globe also talks about Brazilians using Mexico to immigrate illegally to the US.
Several weeks back I noted that Marcela Sanchez had an excellent article on the boat of illegal migrants that sank, killing about 100 people whose only goal was to get to the US.
And yet today's Washington Post reports that we're putting up extra fencing along the US-Mexico border to stop illegal immigration.
Whether they're coming from Mexico, Brazil or Ecuador, they are risking their lives and everything they own because they believe a better life awaits in the US. One more fence, one more wall, one more border guard is not going to deter them from trying. IMMIGRATION REFORM IS NOT ABOUT BIGGER WALLS. The sooner our politicians and the American people understand that, the sooner we can get on to solving the real issues.
