The New York Times and the Miami Herald both cover Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Mexico. The relationship between China and Mexico has not been great in recent years as China has taken some low wage jobs and imported cheap contraband into the country. Both Mexico and China know they need each other as markets for their goods, but too often they're fighting over the same market.
The LA Times covers Venezuela's offer to provide oil to neighboring countries while the Miami Herald reports Sumate may receive another grant from NED. The Venezuelan government has threatened jail time to Sumate's leadership, and I'm personally impressed that they will keep fighting in spite of the threats. The fact there are a few people willing to stay in Venezuela and fight for their country in spite of threats is really good news for Venezuelan democracy.
An opinion column in the Miami Herald discusses the issue of Cuban doctors. The article describes some of the doctors, but I think it's important to remember these doctors are individuals who have a range of views. Some are well trained professionals; some couldn't earn a first aid merit badge much less a medical degree. Some are held hostage by the Cuban government, others are Castro supporters. Some are legitimate aid workers, some are simply spies for the Cuban government. Anyone who tries to treat these doctors as a single issue, describing all of them a certain way, misses the fact that they really are a wide range of individuals.
The New York Times reports on the recovery of condors in the Andes and runs an editorial about the Brazilian government's recent environmental initiative. Some good news from the Amazon.
