Surprise in PAN primary

Mexico's former Energy Secretary Felipe Calderon pulled off a surprise victory in the first of three rounds in the PAN primary. While the media has treated Santiago Creel as the PAN candidate for the past several months, Calderon won 46% of the vote to Creel's 35%. There are two more rounds of voting before the candidate is decided.

The next round of the PRI primary is set for October 30 (for previous commentaries on the PRI primary between Madrazo and Montiel, see here and here).

This open primary process is good for Mexico and is helping out the PAN and the PRI. While some analysts were already giving the 2006 election to Lopez Obrador (even though the polls are close), a competitive and open primary is boosting the name recognition and media time of candidates in the other parties.
