Ok, it really didn't happen on the way in, nor was it funny. I arrived in Bogota last night, an hour late but in good spirits. I had work today, followed by a three day weekend (I love Colombians with all their random holidays).
When I returned from lunch this afternoon, my computer had a blank screen. Actually, it wasn't completely blank; if I stared really closely, I could see what was on the screen. It looks like the lamp that powers the screen burnt out or the inverter that transfers power to the screen failed.
So now I've handed my computer over to a Colombian technician who will hopefully be able to repair it cheaply and quickly. In the meantime, someone was nice enough to loan me a spare computer (although, it's a Mac...).
I've been thinking about getting a new laptop for a while and am leaning towards an Averatec. If any regular readers have opinions on the laptop I should buy, speak now.
Bogota is fine; same as always. Lots of traffic, good night life, a strange mixture of development and poverty, and a country that has really changed over the past few years. Hopefully I'll find time to comment more over the weekend.

About four months ago I went to Sams and bought a $900 dollar Averatec laptop.
For the price I have been really happy with it.
Two notes.
I dumped the XP home it came with and installed XP Pro
The wireless software that came with it kept dropping the signal so I installed Raylink and now it works like a charm.
Other than that it has worked like a charm
I have an Avaratec, as you know. I paid $1000 for it at Circuit City including a four year warranty ($800 without the warranty). It was much less than a VAIO or a Dell, even with the guarantee that I'll have a laptop for four years. I've been very happy with it, especially since it's so light.
I have a 15" PowerBook G4, and I love it. All I can say is, compared to the myriad of Windows-based computers I've worked with, it just works.
