The linkroll I use on the side seems to be down, so here's some of what I'm reading this morning.
The NYT Magazine has an article on the candidacy of Evo Morales and the panic that has hit US officials. Randy and Eduardo already have their comments up.
The Miami Herald covers the "Bolivarian Circles" that have been created in US cities and also notes the big money the Venezuelan government spends lobbying in the US. It's hard not to note the picture of Venezuelan President Chavez in a sombrero singing Mariachi songs.
USA Today covers teams of Mexican officials working to register Mexican citizens abroad so they can vote in the upcoming election. The AP covers border patrol agents hiking in the mountains. The NYT editorial page opposes building a big fence along the border.
This weekend's Houston Chronicle (reprinted by the Miami Herald) profiled Argentine President Kirchner, one of the most popular presidents in Latin America.
Finally, if you didn't catch Oppenheimer's Sunday column on Latin American presence shrinking at US colleges, it's a good read on a really important topic.

On the subject of Latin Americans at U.S. universitites, the Sept./Oct. NACLA Report on the Americas had a good piece called "Empire of Knowledge" about the use of higher education to maintain ideological hegemony. Judith Teichman's book "The Politics of Freeing Markets in Latin America" details the importance of U.S.-university based networks in creating the technocratic circles that administered structural adjustment programs.
Still, it's certainly good to have exchange of students and I certainly enjoy having Latin Americans studying with me.
