Mexico's acting federal police chief was shot dead early Thursday outside his home — a brazen attack as drug traffickers increasingly lash back at a nationwide crackdown on organized crime.Authorities currently believe the Sinaloa Cartel was behind the attack.
Edgar Millan Gomez was shot 10 times after opening the door to his Mexico City apartment complex, where at least one gunman was waiting for him before dawn, the Public Safety Department said. Two bodyguards were also wounded. Millan died hours later at a hospital.

"Acting Police Chief" is a bit misleading. The SSP is one of several different federal level police corporations, and Millan Gomez was General Coordinator of Regional Operations for SSP. As such, his responsiblity was for operational control nationally... making him a likely target for a "hit", if indeed this was the Sinaloa cartel.
El Universal has the dramatic story of the events leading up to the assassination here. Basically, Gomez was head of an operation that nearly nabbed Sinaloan cartel cappo Arturo Beltran Leyva, aka El Barbas just hours before revenge was had. El Barbas' bodyguards had outgunned the Fererales and escaped unharmed.
