Annual ITUC report
This week the International Trade Union Confederation released their annual report on labor violations. The Americas section takes a look at the region as a whole.
Of note, the number of murders in Colombia increased to 49, a 25% increase over last year. The Colombian government still notes that murders are down over 80% during Uribe's term in office and they spend $40 million per year protecting labor leaders. However, labor unions who spoke with the ITUC said that impunity levels on murders remain very high and a combination of threats and legal issues restrict union membership in Colombia.
