Crisis in Honduras 26

Could the coup finally be over?

Media and the OAS are reporting that the negotiators for Micheletti and Zelaya have reached a deal. The details of the agreement remain vague as the OAS did not release the full text. It appears that the question of the president will be brought to the Honduran Congress, a move which Zelaya backed. Other rumors indicate that a power sharing agreement is already in the works. In exchange, both sides will recognize the legitimacy of the upcoming elections.

Zelaya is calling the agreement a win for Honduran democracy. Micheletti said he is "pleased."

The agreement comes just days after the US sent a delegation down to Honduras and successfully convinced the two sides to return to negotiations after they had stalled. From Pakistan, Secretary Clinton praised the new agreement.

Now we'll see if it holds. The ink isn't dry yet. There are a number of actors who still need to weigh in on the agreement and it's possible that either side could back down. There's also a pending judicial case against Zelaya, which may move forward if the agreement does not include amnesty. I think everyone who has followed this crisis for the past four months is either cautiously optimistic or outright skeptical.
