El Salvador deploys military for domestic security

This week, Salvadoran President Funes announced a new plan that will greatly expand the role of the military to support the police in combating violence and insecurity. As many as 7,000 soldiers may be deployed in five provinces to patrol streets, combat gangs and take down criminal networks.

Like many Latin American countries, El Salvador has seen in increase in violence in 2009, adding to the already high levels of crime in the country. Deploying the military domestically is an extreme solution, particularly in a country only two decades removed from civil war, but Funes has determined that the gravity of the security situation requires it.
